Paper dolls

My mother gave me these paperdolls this weekend when we visited a museum.
There are reproductions but beautiful none the less...

I feel so inspired by the outfits I just want everyone of them! Hope I can copy some to make them fit me...

They're made by Gerda Vinding a Danish illustrator who made a ton of these dolls including a very famous one from the 50's called 'Marie' (actually 'Store Marie' (Big Marie)) it was made to promote a biscuit -later came 'Lille Marie' (Little Marie) and 'Sorte Marie' (Black Marie) all representing different types of biscuits. They came in the box when you bought the biscuits and there were about 500 dresses to collect!

Gerda won a 2. price in a big paperdoll contest in Los Angeles in 1991 for one of her 'Bridal' dolls.
Sad to say I don't know much more about her but I'll try to research...

The Incomparable Sally Rand (again...)

Since I'm super busy these days (-and in pain right now since I just got back from a nightmare at the dentist office, I've never had any problems with my teeth but needed a wisdom-tooth pulled out... The tooth had three roots all bend as a hook... the dentist never saw anything like it... which resulted in the tooth being pulled out in three pieces and a small piece of my jawbone came with it!!) I decided to post some of my old post from the Circus Circus blog.... first up Sally Rand, more to come... Enjoy!

Sally Rand was a burlesque dancer and actress most famous for her ostrich feather fan dance and balloon bubble dance.
She ran away with a carnival as a teenager, and later pursued such career opportunities as night club cigarette girl, artist's model, and cafe dancer.

She was born Harriet Helen Gould Beck and she also performed under the name Billie Beck.

During the 1920s, Sally acted on stage and appeared in silent movies. Cecil B. DeMille gave her the name Sally Rand, inspired by a Rand Mcnally atlas.

Full body makeup...

I have this card at home...

...autographed by Miss Sally herself!!!

Sally in Tex Avery's 'Hollywood steps out'. Apparently she's wearing a barrel behind the bubble.

Her most famous appearance was at the 1933 Chicago World's Fair. She had been arrested four times in a single day during the fair due to perceived indecent exposure while riding a white horse down the streets of Chicago, but the nudity was only an illusion... She was wearing a full body suit.

In 1936, she purchased The Music Box burlesque hall in San Francisco, which would later become the Great American Music Hall.

She starred in "Sally Rand's Nude Ranch" at the Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco in 1939 and 1940.

Sally continued to appear on stage doing her fan dance into her sixties. She died in 1979 aged 75.

Rainy days...manicure nights

After so many sunfilled and warm summerdays and hot, hot, hot summernights theres a little rain for us. I don't mind as much as I usually do since the air is still warm and I have to work...
I even planned a little manicure night for myself tonight since it's raining (not often I have time for that).

It'll be a low budget manicure including sugar, lemonjuice and olive oil...

I've had this shape for my nails for quite some time but tonight I might sharpen them a bit...
I plan to do a proper moon-manicure. I have done this many times for evenings (..haven't gone out in awhile..) but for weekdays I usually do plain full color nails right before I jump on my bicycle to go to work.
I found some inspiration in these Cutex ads from the 30's...

Now I only wish a had some Cutex nailpolish...
Guess my Red Premiere or Rose Orange Coral Pink (It's really called that!) from Dior will have to do.

..and if the rain continues tomorrow I might wear what she's wearing....
